Commanded by John Coffee "Jack" Hays they distinguished themselves at the Battle of Monterey and during subsequent anti-guerrilla operations in which they excelled. Both intrepid and ruthless in battle they were soon branded "los Diablo Tejanos" by their Mexican foes.
