Artist Note from Don Troiani: "A company of the Maryland Regiment escapes across Gowanus Creek. The Vechte Cortelyou house is in the background. In researching primary accounts of this event I could never find any evidence of the Marylanders attacking the house or even heavy fighting around there . It was a nice fairy tale invented in the 19th Century."
